2011's Greatest Hits
Though we know 2012 will be exciting, we’d like to lay 2011 to rest with a recap of its biggest and most read news, as reported by Google Analytics. For all those who are first starting at Texas State or were here and just not paying attention, here’s a timeline of the past year: January - Dennis Franchione is found out via Twitter to be Texas State’s new head football coach -...

2011's last production night: some highlights
Even as I type this at midnight, the Star’s production team is hard at work cranking out the 12-page final issue of the Fall 2011 semester, which will hit shelves Thursday morning. So far it’s gone considerably smoother than it could have. Though the rest of the editorial board will be back for more come January, tonight is the last night for current managing editor Rikki Saldivar and...

Calling all Men
Dudes, The Star is currently suffering from a critical beard deficiency. Despite a surplus of sweet ‘staches around campus in observance of No Shave November, we have yet to receive any submissions to our annual Beard Gallery. E-mail a photo of your beard (and also the rest of your face) to starwebeditor@txstate.edu and include your name and major, or, better yet, bring your beard to the...

Fun Fun Day Three: the end.
It’s over! That was a long weekend. I met a lot of cool people, saw some great bands and had a fun time creeping on Ryan Gosling, but it’s time to get back to the real world (and write an article for Tuesday’s paper.) I spent a lot of time at the orange stage this afternoon for We Were Promised Jetpacks, Mates of State, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Architecture in Helsinki,...

Emmys!
We’d like to briefly interrupt Hollie’s Fun Fun Fun Fest coverage to show some love for the University Star multimedia department, who are now rocking three more EMMY awards than they were a couple days ago. The Lone Star Emmy awards were announced this weekend, and the Star took one home for every category they were nominated in. Sizable high-fives are in order for Tina Phan (former...

FFFFest Day 2: Dust everywhere.
I am exhausted.  Day two I started out at Thieves, a local pop-punk band that I really like and have mutual friends with. A couple of the band members used to go to Texas State, so that’s a nice local tie. They let me interview them in the media tent after their show and were all really nice, so hopefully I get a good Q&A to go along side my story Tuesday.  Watched The Joy...

Fun Fun Fun Fest day one!
I smell like marijuana (not mine!), am covered in dust, have a blister the size of a half-dollar on my right heel and am pretty sure I’m developing Tinnitus. All signs of a successful Fun Fun day one. I started out the day listening to Heartless Bastards and The Thermals, both of whom put on solid shows. The Thermals were especially fun to watch. Their music is upbeat and happy and makes me...

A true story about zombies
Austin, Josh, Mark, and Lee went on a zombie hunt tonight on campus. Austin and Mark were putting a story together; Lee and Josh just wanted to see zombies. It has been popularized that zombies are slow to move, have little if any sense of stealth, and are immediately obvious from a distance. These are lies. Most of the hunt was spent not running in fear or heroically beating back hordes of the...

The very first entry.
For about a hundred years, the University Star has kept the student masses informed on the happenings about Texas State. We’ve done our best to be as inclusive and balanced as possible over the years, and as far as we can tell have no plans to stop. What a lot of readers may not realize is the Star is entirely student run. From the content to the layout to the code that holds the website...
